High Speed 3D Camera Captures Photons

On Wednesday, September 12, Fishbon Event Lab agents were briefed by NASA and ASC scientist and engineer Steve on a spectacular New Camera that has been developed in Santa Barbara. The device is the fastest camera in the world, capable of capturing photons in flight. In case you're wondering, that's the speed of light. In addition to his exciting presentation, Steve also reviewed recent work on the Mars Rover project and wrapped up the evening with a demo of the $250,000 camera for an appreciative crowd of Fishbon denizens.

Fishbon Breathless is So Sweet

On Friday and Saturday, August 10th and 11th, Fishbon presented Fishbon Breathless,the third in its series of mainstage events. The adventure began with a journey though the Magic Forest of custom Fishbon-style trees with the obligatory interaction provided by Jon and Alan, and with original music by New Music Cell leader Scott. The path was marked by a glowing EL wire line and gave revelers the immediate dilemma of whether to follow...or not to follow..to veer from path or explore uncharted territory. When visitors passed embedded Motion Sensors the lighting changed , a sputtering vibrator bridge was triggered , and a flock of EL wire birds were released to fly overhead. Once through the forest, the next encounter was with the Circus Bar, and the beginning of a 120 foot Wrap-Around Catwalk perfect for showing off the latest Burning Man bound Playawear. At the stroke of Midnight, the Catwalk morphed into a stage with the six Cabaret Vignettes of the New True Adventures of Eros and Psyche presented Pageant Wagon style complete with Dance Pole, Psyche's Cottage, Light Stages, Bed and floor fan equipped Marilyn Stage (named in honor of the famous scene of Marilyn Monroe standing on a subway grate with her skirt blowing up). An original musical prologue was sung by Ronit with accompaniment by Frode and Brad. Music for the show was provided by Carrie on accordion and Brad on drums with Frode on keyboards. Above the fray was the sensuous Voyeur Lounge designed and implemented by Rhea.

Ritual and Memory Sound and Visual Dreamscapes

On Wednesday, August 1, operatives from Fishbon Event Lab were on hand for the release of UCSB music professor Stephen's latest DVD. Ritual and Memory, the title of the piece is not so much a survey of Stephen Pope’s music as it is a reframing in an unfolding series of Sound and Visual Dreamscapes. This music invokes the greater self that communicates with us in dreams, as well as the rituals through which we communicate with that greater self. [...] Stephen’s music persists at the edge of a self-inventive technology featuring myriad new programming languages and sound synthesizers, but his engineering is a feat of bricolage that never loses its sense of human (and angelic) connection, whether through the voice in speech and song or the body in dance.

Jeff in Iran

On Wednesday, July 25th Fishbon Event Lab operatives gathered at the Pescadrome for a review of Jeff's amazing images from a recent trip to Iran. It was a last minute opportunity offered by a former professor, and in today's politically charged environment certainly not to be missed. Since the 1970s, Iran has been off-limits to most Americans, so it was fascinating to learn how diverse the middle Eastern nation is, both geographically and ethnically.

Building Breathless

Down to less than a month after the Crucible Fire Festival, Fishbon collaborating artists cranked into gear for the Fishbon Breathless event (3rd in a series of Pescadrome mainstage events). The Eros and Psyche myth cast began dance rehearsals and production crews began work on the 100 foot Catwalk, Magic Forest and Voyeur Lounge.

Crucible Fire Fiesta Recap

On July 18, Fishbon Event Lab agents were treated to pictures and video from the recent Crucible Fire Arts Festival in Oakland. The 4 day event, complete with an elaborated Fire Opera is the largest of its kind in the United States. Many of the fire sculptures were recent veterans of the Burning Man festival in Nevada and the effect of dozens of elaborate propane breathing Mechanical Fire Beasts was impressive. Fishbon contributed seven of Alan's sculptures to the event, the largest number by a single organization.

On Wednesday, July 11, Fishbon Event Lab operatives gathered for a briefing by Jon on his recent voyage by car from Plymouth, England to Banjul, Gambia. The Plymouth-Banjul Challenge pitted our intrepid hero and his ex-wife against the forces of nature, peccadilloes of mechanical devices and the win at all costs attitude that drove them on. Along the way there were countless adventures.
